Building for what’s next

When we started building OEC Fiber, we knew the way people used the internet would continue to change. What we couldn’t know was exactly what that change would look like.

Today, homes have more connected devices than ever. We work, learn, stream, game and stay connected in ways that place greater demands on our internet service. Technology won’t stop moving forward.

Neither can we.

For about the last year, teams across OEC and OEC Fiber have been preparing our network for its next chapter. We’ve upgraded equipment throughout the system, tested new technology and worked through countless details to increase what our fiber network can deliver, not just today, but as our subscribers’ needs continue to grow.

People behind the progress

One thing I’ve learned from being here since the beginning is just how many people it takes to make something like this happen.

There are the teams working directly on the fiber network, of course, but the work extends far beyond them. Engineering, linemen, member and subscriber services, marketing and employees throughout OEC and OEC Fiber have all played a role in getting us to this point.

That matters to me because OEC Fiber itself began as a cooperative effort. We built the network to bring reliable, high-speed broadband to members and communities that needed better options. Nearly a decade later, we reinvested in that network and made it even more capable for the people who rely on it.

The October issue of the Co-op News will show you more of what that work actually looks like, from testing new equipment to preparing it for our network. Keep an eye out for the story and a closer look at some of the people making Multi-Gig possible.

More speed, more value

So, what does all that work mean for you?

Multi-Gig internet is coming soon. Our current 100 Mbps residential plan will increase to 500 Mbps while remaining $55 per month. Our 1 Gig plan will increase to 2 Gig while remaining $85 per month, and we’ll introduce a new 5 Gig plan for $115 per month. All three plans will offer symmetrical upload and download speeds with no data caps or contracts.

Our business subscribers will see significant changes, too. When OEC Fiber started, a 1 Gig business connection cost $500 per month. With our new plans, we can increase speeds while reducing rates, in some cases by nearly 75%.

I think that comparison tells the story better than I ever could. Over the years, we’ve continued investing in the network, improving its capabilities and finding ways to turn that progress into something tangible for our subscribers: faster service and greater value.

Multi-Gig gives us plenty to celebrate, but the speeds themselves are only part of the story. What matters more is what they represent: years of work, continued investment in our network and a commitment to make that progress meaningful for the people we serve.

I’m incredibly proud of the people across OEC and OEC Fiber who brought us to this point. More importantly, I’m proud that the work they’ve done puts us in a position to keep delivering more for our subscribers without losing sight of what OEC Fiber was built to do in the first place.
