Preparing for Storm Season
Storm season in Oklahoma is never a surprise. If you’ve lived here long, you know our weather can turn on a dime. That’s why at OEC Fiber, we don’t “start” preparing for storm season. We live prepared for it every single day.
When most people think about preparing for storms, they picture backup equipment or trucks staged and ready to roll in the event of an outage. And yes, we do that. But what really protects your service are the small, proactive steps we take 365 days a year.
Storm resilience is not just about reacting in the moment. It is about learning, adjusting and strengthening the network wherever we can.
For example, the wind in Oklahoma is always a force to be reckoned with. That is why we installed something called line dampeners on our longer stretches of aerial lines. These devices wrap around the lines, altering how wind interacts with them by making the wind flow around them. This keeps the wind from pushing through the line and helps us avoid line galloping. Reducing that movement protects the lines and lowers the risk of outages.
We also regularly evaluate our underground infrastructure. For example, if a car hits a pedestal, an above-ground fiber box, we will repair it. If it is hit a second time, we will consider relocating it to a safer spot.
