Weather Worries

Severe Weather Impacting Internet and Phone Services

“Every time it rained, we had no phone service,” said WildCare Executive Director, Inger Giuffrida, of their previous service.

Rain-induced line noise is an unwelcome pest. It disrupts critical communications and can make conducting business nearly impossible. As Spring storms approach, it pays to take a closer look at your service to protect against heavy downpours.

It all comes down to the wires. The conductivity of copper wire can cause a signal to disperse, or lessen, when traveling through water. It scatters the signal and introduces line noise. These call disruptions can take the form of static or reduced volume on the other end of the line. Some callers may hear their voice echoing back to them or even pick up cross-talk, hearing conversation or background noise from other telephone lines.

All these issues make it challenging to have a clear and consistent conversation. In some cases, the noise and interference can lead to dropouts, or temporary signal loss. The most severe cases result in complete call loss.

WildCare dealt with these issues before switching to OEC Fiber. They are a non-profit organization in Noble that provides people a place to bring native wildlife struggling to survive with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. They provide food, shelter and top-notch medical care to more than 240 different species of native wildlife that are ill, injured or orphaned. Their ability to communicate with those trying to find care for wildlife could be the difference between life and death for these animals.

Imagine running a business that could not communicate with customers every time it rained. What if it limited all electronic communications? Wi-Fi issues limit access to social media, email and other forms of electronic communications.

So what is the solution? A different kind of connection.

Wiring inside and outside of the building causes these disruptions. Switching to a more reliable option, like fiber, helps eliminate the rain-induced line noise for a better overall connection.

Although OEC Fiber can re-wire someone’s building for them, it is not part of a standard installation. We bring fiber optic cable into the building every time. This dramatically improves the quality of the service coming into the building. Our business team does a full wiring inspection before recommending replacements or moving to a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone solution.

Our experts will discuss and deploy the best solution to fit your business. We customize our solutions to meet your needs and train you and your staff on the new system. We even provide same-day service and support if the need arises.

With fiber, severe weather and wet conditions do not equal a service disruption. The glass strands that make up fiber cables use light to transmit data. These strands can’t conduct electricity, so the signal can’t disperse in wet conditions and slow you down.

Regardless of your area’s forecast, fiber’s superior connection keeps your home and business humming along with a reliable signal and open communication when you need it most.
