Modern medical care depends on more than what happens in the exam room.
At Premiere Pediatrics in Norman, technology supports nearly every part of the patient experience, from electronic medical records and internet-based phone systems to communication with referring providers and specialized equipment throughout the clinic.
For Glen Diaz, nurse practitioner, practice manager and one of the clinic’s owners, reliable connectivity has become essential.
“We wouldn’t be able to do our job right now if we didn’t have that technology,” Diaz said.
Before switching to OEC Fiber, Premiere Pediatrics experienced repeated internet downtime and disconnections that disrupted the clinic’s workflow.
“When we were having multiple episodes of downtime with our internet, it caused a major disruption in patient care,” Diaz said.
When providers cannot quickly access records or other information they need, the effects can extend to the patient experience.
“Patients rely on us to be consistent. They rely on us to be efficient,” Diaz said. “If we’re not able to obtain the information we need in a timely manner, it will become a customer service issue.”
That dependence on connectivity has grown dramatically during Diaz’s more than 25 years with the practice. When he started, Premiere Pediatrics still used paper charts. Today, much of the clinic operates electronically.
One of the more unexpected examples is vaccine storage. Premiere Pediatrics uses internet-connected refrigerators and freezers that can notify the team of temperature changes, helping staff monitor the environment where vaccines are stored.
Connectivity is important enough that the clinic has taken steps to keep those monitoring systems online even during a power disruption.
Reliable service was only part of what Premiere Pediatrics wanted from its internet provider. The clinic also needed support that could respond when there was a problem.
Its previous provider was not local, and Diaz said resolving issues often required working through several layers of communication.

“I can make a phone call, trust that it’s going to be taken care of, versus multiple layers of communication to even express what problems we’re having,” he said.
